When John Dore announced his retirement everyone expected alot of attention around the February 20 game. Amid all the interviews and tributes, the players, staff and fans reserved the most fitting one.
In front of a packed Loyola Gymnasium, the Stingers defeated the McGill Redmen 69-61.
Mukiya Post led all scorers with 22 points for Concordia. His rookie point guard, Frank Mpeck dished out a career-high 13 assists.
On the emotional night, Concordia took control early, leading 15-7 after the first quarter. The Stingers were still ahead 31-26 at the half. The #1 team in the province, McGill, rebounded in the 3rd, taking a 47-44 lead going into the 4th quarter.
In the final period, it was all Concordia. The Stingers outscored McGill 25-14 to close one of the most decorated chapters in Quebec and Canada university basketball history.
Coach Dore took office in the 1989-1990 season. He led the Stingers to 13 national championships, including 7 in a row between 1990 and 1996. Concordia made it to three national championship games (1990, 1995, 2005), winning in 1990.
John Dore was recognized 13 times as Quebec’s top university coach, and in 1991 at Canada’s top university bench boss.
The Queen, NY native joined the Concordia basketball program as a basketball player in 1971. He was a three-time all Quebec star guard between 1971 and 1976.
